How to Blur Sensitive Info in a Mac Screenshot
Here's how to cover the sensitive parts of a screenshot before you share it. With Floatie's mosaic tool it takes a few steps, right where you captured.
Screenshots pick up email addresses, phone numbers, and internal codes all the time. A bug report catches an API key next to the error; a shot of a meeting deck keeps somebody else’s contact details in the corner.
Post that straight into Slack and it can come back to bite you. You only need to cover that one region before sharing, but the built-in macOS tools make it more work than it should be.

Adding a mosaic, step by step
- Capture the region you want to cover with ⌘⇧2 (command+shift+2). ESC cancels at any point, and the capture never becomes a file — it floats on your screen as a shot.
- Open the editor (Pro) on that shot with ⌘E (command+E). It’s yours to use during the 14-day free trial.
- Pick the mosaic tool. There are two styles — blur and pixelate — and the strength is adjustable for each.
- Drag over what you want to cover. If several spots need it, just drag over each one.
- Hit Done to close the editor. If you need a real file, ⌘⇧S (command+shift+S) saves as PNG, JPEG, HEIC, PDF, or TIFF.

Blur or pixelate?
For text and faces — anything that must be unreadable — pixelate is the safer bet. Blur suits a lighter touch, when you want to keep the sense of the background and only soften what’s underneath. At low strength letters can still show through, so zoom in once before you save.
Covered the wrong thing? Undo puts it back. If you have several screens to clean up, float several shots at once and work through them one by one.
Sharing straight after
Assign Share to a corner button and the moment you close the editor you can send the shot to AirDrop, Messages, or Mail through the system share sheet. Nearby Macs and iPhones go over AirDrop; everything else picks Messages or Mail. Share isn’t in the default layout, so set it on the corner you want first, in Settings → Appearance → Corner Buttons.
If everything sensitive sits in one edge of the frame, cropping that strip away works just as well as a mosaic.
