Scrolling Screenshots on Mac: A Long Page in One Shot

Screenshotting a long web page or a long conversation means taking several shots of the parts you can’t see at once — and then stitching them together yourself afterwards. Miss one and you start over.

Floatie has a scrolling capture that stitches as you scroll (Pro). You scroll the screen yourself while it captures, so it comes out as one image with no other tool involved. Web page, chat window, Notion doc — anything that scrolls.

Handy for pulling a long Slack thread together to share with your team, or capturing an entire reference document to keep.

Capturing a long page

1. Press ⌃⌥3 (control+option+3). Region selection starts.
2. Drag out the area you want to capture.
3. Scroll inside that area for real. The capture only advances while you scroll with the wheel or trackpad.
4. Done scrolling? Hit the Stop button or ESC. Pressing ⌃⌥3 again also ends it.
5. The stitched image floats as a shot. Move it, resize it, or save it like any other.

Things that come up

• Stop scrolling and the capture stops with it — a frame identical to the last one gets skipped.
• Very long scrolls can cut off partway. There are limits on how many frames and how much length one capture can stitch.
• Scroll direction is detected from your first movement (up, down, left, right). If it keeps guessing wrong, lock the direction in Settings.
• If ⌃⌥3 collides with another shortcut, change it in Settings → Shortcuts.

How far the built-in tools go

Safari can save a whole page as a PDF. Export to PDF from the print dialog or the File menu and the full page lands in one PDF without any scrolling. It only works on Safari web pages, though, and what you get is a PDF, not an image.

For a Slack conversation or an internal docs tool with no PDF export, that route is closed. Stitching the screen as you scroll works anywhere.

Saving works like any other shot: ⌘⇧S (command+shift+s) writes PNG, PDF, or whichever format you pick.

Left floating, it also sits nicely beside other material for comparison. While the shot is on screen you can move between documents and check it against the original. Scrolling capture is open during the 14-day free trial too.
