How it works
Click, and the foreground lifts out
macOS Vision finds the foreground right on this Mac. No upload, no account, no server queue. Edges blurred by hair, glass, or motion are handled by the same model Preview and Photos use, so the cutout comes out at the same quality as the rest of the system's tools.
Each subject comes out as its own layer
If a shot has three separate subjects, you get back three layers. Each sits exactly where it was, so the picture looks identical to the original right after processing, but now you can pick each one up, move it, delete it, or resize it. Merging everything into one flat image would turn it into a lump you can't touch — that's closer to flattening than removing a background.
Grab what it missed, yourself
With the editor's Subjects tool, click a single subject, ⇧-click to grab several, or drag a box to select a group at once. Draw a box over an area with nothing recognized, and it re-cuts just inside that box, so you can rescue a small object the first pass missed.
When you'd use it
A product photo for a deck
Cut it out without opening an image editor, and place it on whatever background you want.
Just one person from a group photo
Click just that subject. Everyone else stays intact, each as its own layer.
Reusing just the app window
Lift just the window out of a cluttered desktop screenshot and place it on a clean canvas.
Questions about this
Does the cutout image get sent anywhere?
No. macOS Vision processes it right on this Mac, and the image never leaves the device.
Why does it split into several pieces?
Because each subject becomes a separate object. That's the point — move or delete one and the rest stay put.
What if it misses something?
Drag a box over that spot with the Subjects tool, and it re-cuts just inside that area.
