How to Take Useful Bug Report Screenshots on Mac
A good screenshot shows what went wrong. A useful bug report also explains how to get there.
A screenshot of a broken screen leaves a few questions open: which action caused it, what should have happened, and whether it happens every time. Pair a focused capture with a short explanation so the person investigating can reproduce the problem.
Here is a practical workflow for reporting a Mac app or website issue, with a template you can copy into an issue tracker or support message.
1. Keep enough context in the frame
Capture the failing control and the result together when possible. If a Save button produces an error, include the button, the error, and the relevant part of the form. An entire desktop makes small details hard to find; an isolated error message may hide which screen produced it.
Use sample content when reproducing the issue. Crop out unrelated tabs and account details. Credentials and private values are best removed from the source before capturing; a light blur is not a dependable way to remove text.
Floatie’s region capture keeps the result floating while you return to the app and check the steps. Take a separate capture if another state is needed to explain the sequence.
2. Mark the observation, then explain it
One arrow to the failing control is often enough. Use numbered callouts when the reader needs to follow an order, and keep the explanation beside the attachment. Do not draw over the exact error or the value that demonstrates the bug.
With a Floatie shot active, ⌘E opens the Pro editor for arrows, text, and numbered marks. The editor feature page covers its tools.

If the error exists only as an image, OCR can help copy its text. Check the copied result against the original, especially punctuation and similar-looking characters. Searchable error text belongs in the report as well as in the picture.
3. Add this reproduction template
The example below is fictional; replace it with your actual observations.
Title: Save stays disabled after entering a project name
Environment:
- App and version:
- macOS version:
- Browser and version, if relevant:
Steps:
1. Open a new project.
2. Enter a name.
3. Try to select Save.
Expected: Save becomes available after a valid name is entered.
Actual: Save stays disabled.
Frequency: Reproduced in 3 out of 3 attempts.
Attachment: project-save-disabled.png
Replace the frequency with what you actually tested. If it happened once, say that. For a website layout issue, include the window size or zoom setting if it affects the result.
4. Choose a screenshot or a recording
A screenshot works for a wrong value, missing label, or broken layout. A short recording is more useful for a disappearing menu, unexpected scrolling, or a sequence of clicks. Record only the relevant part of the screen and stop once the behavior is visible.
Attach the file to the issue when it needs to remain available with the report. Before submitting, open the attachment and check that the important text is readable. If a size limit gets in the way, reduce the screenshot size while preserving that detail.
